One of the primary Doshas is called Kapha. Kapha is made of the elements earth and water. A person whose primary Dosha is Kapha most likely has a medium to large built bodily frame. They can be stocky with square shaped fingers and wide shoulders. They are also strong, enduring, and faithful. Kapha is nurturing and compassionate. Although, slow to commit, they are loyal friends and lovers. A typical Kapha temperament is kind, melodic in speech and steady in action. If unbalanced, however, Kapha can cause weight gain, lethargy, gluttony and deep depression and attachment. Because we possess all the Doshas, it is possible to develop a Kapha imbalance even if it is not our primary Dosha. What this means is that, something in our internal or external environment has aggravated Kapha. For example, a person who is thin by nature suddenly gains weight and has great difficulty losing it expresses a symptom of a Kapha imbalance. Some causes of Kapha imbalance include to much cold and oily foods such as yogurt, cream, milk and cheese. Sweet grains, especially wheat, greatly increase Kapha. Sleeping in, and to much rest also cause Kapha imbalances. Some symptoms of high Kapha include a feeling of heaviness in the whole body, nausea, vomiting, and excess mucus. Emotionally, Kapha can cause dullness, depression and a strong attachment to the past. Strong exercise is one of the best antidotes for Kapha. Deep massage with mustard or almond oil will cause warmth to the body and reduce Kapha. Saunas, sweating and eating foods that are bitter and astringent will decrease Kapha, as well as light fasting.
